Met Gala 2016 : Our Top Picks for Best Hair & Make-up

I look forward to this event each year because the hair, makeup and fashion makes the Oscars look SUPER boring. For those of you who aren’t familiar with this event it’s a fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in NYC. Each year the event has a theme for that years Costume Institue Exhibition which sets the tone for the formal attire of the night. This year the theme was “Manus X Machina : Fashion in an Age of Technology”. Which to many attendants this year appears to translate into lots of metal, latex, shiny silver stuff and mechanical arms. Madonna decided to do her own thing and go with a Dominatrix theme … but whats new? While reviewing all the looks it was hard for me to focus on the hair & make-up because I was so in love with some of the dresses. So I think what I’ll do is just critique my top dress picks for their hair & make-up. Hope that’s okay with you.

As always, the event is hosted by Anna Winter of Vogue and always includes only whoever she personally invites. Here is a photo of her and her daughter:

Okay shall we get started?!!

Let’s talk about Beyonce. I wasn’t sure how I felt about this dress. At first I saw a lemonade- colored, latex princess dress of the future with extremely large shoulder puffs. My second thought was that her body looks insane in this skin tight number but… it must not be breathable at all, which is kind of gross. The color I felt was too close to her natural skin tone and would have looked better on someone who was either really fair skinned or super dark. I would have liked it better on her if it were in white with sleeves that weren’t so big. I loved her hair – perfect highlights for her. BUT… Her make-up was a perfect example of a smokey eye gone wrong. A lot of brides want a smokey eye and there IS a proper way to do it where you don’t loose the detail of the eye in photographs especially when pictures are taken in bright sunlight that will cast harsh shadows. I think her MUA could have toned it down on the eye and used more of a black, blue silver palette to show more definition. Maybe adding a little more color to her lips – still with a nude palette.

Karlie Kloss was wearing Brandon Maxwell. With a body like that why cover it – right? Damn! This dress was one of my favorites for sure, but the hair and make-up were not.

I loved the red lip, but her eyebrows were all wrong and her skin looked oily and not contoured correctly. I would have done a light bronze on the bottom outer lashes with uno off white pearl eyeliner to open her eyes a bit, and a little more blush. The hairstyle was okay, but considering the theme I think a faux hawk up-do would have given this look just enough edge and played on the theme more. I would have added different earrings for sure.

Rachel McAdams has been killing it in the fashion world. I love her make-up and hair. The only thing I would have done differently is contoured her forehead a bit more since it looks a little large compared to her adorable little face. I had to add her here because she is my husbands girl crush, and I can’t say that I blame him. I would have added a belt to this look to make it look more Mad Max – but that’s just me. Well done my lady!

Kendall Jenner in Versace was beautiful and simple. I felt it fit the theme perfectly as well as her killer body. Her makeup was on point. Her hair… not so much. With the high neckline I was happy that she wore her hair up and I didn’t mind the pony tail. It was the front of the hair that didn’t photography well. I would have added more volume thru the top by adding some twists or done a more “futuristic hairstyle” to suit the theme. Also would have added earrings and/or bracelets.

My #1 Best Dressed & Best Hair & Make-up goes to Jourdan Dunn. Her Balmain gown fit her body perfectly and was hands down the best dress for this theme. She looks so classy  and beautiful from head to toe. I’m in love with this silver/purple hombre hair color, and her sleek, stylish bob. Her make-up is pure perfection in every way. Not too silvery and not too dark. Her skin looks flawless – I LOVE this look!!
