You love when other people wear their hair in stylish up-do’s. What’s the trick to make it work? Here are a few tips & tricks that will make styling your hair look awesome in an easy & simple up-do:
1. Use Day Old Hair
Yes it is true, freshly washed hair is usually too slippery to get enough “grip” to make your up-do last all night. Washing your hair the day before an event works much better. If you are a person that must wash your hair each day, don’t fret! You’ll need to take a few extra steps to ensure that your hair has enough texture to hold it’s hairstyle.
2. Add Dry Shampoo or Texturizing Powder
Yes! Add dry shampoo or texturizing powder to clean hair or in dirty hair that needs to move volume. Different brands have different strengths in stiffness or the amount of structure it provides. If you try one for your hair and it doesn’t feel right, try a different brand. It may take a few tries to find the right one for your hair texture. I love Bumble & Bumble’s spray hair powder as well as Oribe Dry Shampoo for beachy wavy styles. For up-do’s, my favorite is the Osis Dust it texturizing powder which feels tingly and fresh when applied and creates a stronger base.
3. Try a Texturizing Spray for Beachy Waves:
Other options for adding texture to an up-do hairstyle are basic texture sprays or a sea salt spray like Bumble & Bumble’s Surf Spray. These work well for naturally curly hair.

4. Mousse Makes All Things Possible
Some girls think that their hair doesn’t hold curl. In my experience, if the hair has the right amount of mouse it will hold better. I know that if I prep their hair with mousse and create a foundation, that their hair will hold curl MUCH better. If you have a trial and you know your hair doesn’t hold curl, prep it properly with a strong hold mouse from roots to ends. It does matter which mousse I use. I love “Grip” from Osis for a clean hold. It won’t make the client’s hair feel sticky or stiff. I usually use about the size of an egg, but if I really want hold I’ll use more. Really, just know that with enough mousse, anyone’s hair can hold curl and it will create a great foundation for any up-do.
3. Heat Protectant!
Make sure you protect your hair from heat damage before you style your hair with heat. My favorite way to do this is with a multi-tasking product like L’Oreal’s Total Repair 5 hair oil. It is lightweight and adds amazing shine, but also protects hair up to 450 degrees!
4. Place Your Part
Whenever you do wash your hair, the day before or the morning of, make sure you put your part in the right spot. If you want a center part for your updo, put it there! By drying your part in a different location, you do make it hard to move around later. Plan ahead.
