There are many things to take into consideration before applying eyeshadow.

  • Are your eyes symmetrical? If not how will you need to shade them to make them appear more symmetrical?
  • Are your eyes wide-set, or close together, in relation to the proportions of your face?
  • What color are your eyes?
  • Is the arch of your eyebrow above the outermost part of your iris?
  • Do you have eyes that are sunken in or protrude?
  • Is creasing a problem?

Here are a few tips to make eyeshadow application look its best:

  • Remember to always start with the lightest color all over the eyelid. This will absorb the oils on the eyelid and allow for the other colors to go on evenly.
  • Always start with the lightest color and work darker.
  • For eyes that are not symmetrical, shade them so that they appear more symmetrical.
  • If your eyes are wide set avoid cat-eye eyeliner or use shading too far out on the corners
  • If your eyes are closer together use lighter colors closer to your nose.
  • For eyes that are blue- pinks, grays and browns are great colors
  • For eyes are green- purples and warm browns will make them look the most vibrant
  • For eyes that are brown- use colors that match your skin tone rather than eye color.
  • Mature skin should use mainly matte colors. Eyeshadow with shimmer will reflect and accentuate wrinkles. If you do choose to use shimmery shadows use them sparingly. A lighter color like vanilla or pink can be used to highlight the arch of the brows and near the tear ducts of the eye.
  • If you have sunken in eyes you may need to use a concealer to even out the skin tone then use light colors near the inside part of the eye. Avoid using dark colors on the center part of the eyelid.
  • If you have eyes that protrude shadow the lids so they don’t appear as large.
  • For problems with creasing use Laura Mercie concealer or primer on the eyelid before applying eyeshadow.
  • Remember to use eyeliner to create the perfect shape for your eyes. Remember you don’t have to line all the way across your eye. Determine the shape of your eye. Is it round, almond, slanted etc? Use liner to make your eyes appear larger and more proportionate in relation to your face shape.
