Hair can be deceiving when it comes to density and fullness. For many of you who have a lot of fine hair –  it can be  hard to style. This combination of density and texture can give off the appearance that your hair is flat or dull. Here are some tips and tricks to styling your hair to get that perfect “Victoria’s Secret” volume and movement.

Cut: If your hair is straight, fine, thick and long – ask for long layers with the top layers thinned out for movement. If you have wavy or curly hair have them carve into the top layers with scissors lightly to add volume instead of using the thinning shears. If you have short, straight hair – use the thinning shears (lightly) in the crown area for volume. If you have wavy or curly hair use shears to texturize the tips of the hair for texture and volume. If you have fine curly hair don’t let your stylist use thinning shears AT ALL unless you want a big afro puff on your head. Thinning shears cut shorter pieces which add volume to your hair by supporting the longer pieces from underneath.

Shampoo: Opt for a more invigorating shampoo that will really get the follicles on your scalp to perk up. Try Schwartzcopf’s Volumizing Shampoo. Really work your shampoo onto your head too by massaging your scalp, stimulating blood flow.

Conditioner: This is where a lot of products that weigh your hair down get snuck into your daily routine. Steer clear of anything that says “hydrating” and “smoothing” on the bottle because these most likely have oils in them that will keep your hair from gaining volume. Try using a lightweight spray in conditioner on mid shaft thru ends or only put conditioner on mid-shaft thru ends so not to weight the roots down.

Blowdrying: When using any hot tools for your hair remember that having fine hair is like having a cashmere sweater. You can’t treat it like polyester or cotton even. You have to take VERY special care of it. Your hair is the one accessory that is on your body permanently so take care of it. First step, spray a heat protectant all over hair -very important for fine hair. Add root boost or volumizing mouse to the roots and power dry it about 80{394ba9b977cdb97484e9e35f39db822ee8275a3caece20bc8b8378ea68910770} of the way concentrating on working the roots in the opposite direction of their natural growth. Next section your hair out and blow-dry your bangs first working them in different directions at the roots then finishing them from your part i the direction you want them to lay. When you get to the top section of your head leave velcro rollers in after you round brush until the hair cools. Use small clips to hold them in place if necessary. Once your hair is almost dry – if you really want tons of volume, spray the roots with a medium hold hairspray and  then flip your hair upside down and use a diffuser in a twisting motion. This will give it that perfect bed- head volume!

Tease: Let the rollers out  add a  little bit of texturizing powder or dry shampoo and lightly tease the parts of hair at the crown of your head.

Root Lifter: After teasing, spritz a small amount of root lifter in your hair to make sure your roots stay up. This can be in either mousse or spray form just make sure not to put in too much product to work against you and weigh hair down in the process.

Hairspray: Look for hairsprays that have thickening or volumizing agents built into them to help with your fine hair. Use them to set your overall look.

Layers: The next time you head to your salon to get your hair cut, give layers a try. By layering sections of hair, a texturized look is created which gives off the sense of thicker hair.

Brushing: Don’t brush your hair too often, this stimulates oils from the scalp which will make hair flat. If you must fix your hair with some sort of a tool, opt for a wide-tooth comb.

Washing Your Hair: We know you have probably heard this about three thousand times but do not wash your hair everyday. You will benefit from this by getting fuller looking hair at the roots, and just use dry shampoo in-between washes!

… Speaking of Dry Shampoo: Texturizing Powder is the bomb!! If you have fine limp hair and have not tried using a texturizing powder then you don’t know what you’re missing. Finding the right one for your hair texture can take a few tries but once you find one that you like its pretty darn cool.  Right now my favorite is Oribe’s Dry texturizing spray. It smells like heaven and works really well to give my hair that extra volume on the second or 3rd day. For really fine hair and for updos I prefer a stronger hold powder called ” Dust it” by Schwartzcopf. It has a tingly feel and a little goes a long way.

So try these tips and let me know how it works out.
